It was stock with manifolds, stock compression, carb, intake, ignition, and factory stock grind camshaft, etc. As the world turns...I get more dizzy!. This is where most of the difference between the engines is made up. The 429, with less displacement volume, had a shorter stroke length of 3.59, meaning it produced less power per camshaft rotation than the 460, which had a stroke length of 3.85, as mentioned above. The longer stroke produces more power and also allows for more and better high. The base engine in the Cobra was the four-barrel 429 Thunder Jet, rated at 360 horsepower, with the 370-hp 429 Cobra Jet engine optional. Models equipped with the 429 Thunder Jet featured an "N" code in the vehicle identification number, while the 429 Cobra Jet had a "C" code. The Cobra Jet engine could also be ordered with Ram Air via Ford's. Then there was the 429 Cobra Jet (CJ). It was built only in 1970-71. It was only installed in mid-size (1970-71) and pony cars (1971 only). 370 HP (likely underrated), thick strong blocks and massive ports int he heads. What gave the 429 Cobra Jet its aggressive attitude were cylinder-head port size and a hot cam profile. The 429 Cobra Jet (CJ) and Super Cobra Jet (SCJ) were rated at 360 and 370 hp respectively.
